Qualifications

Student Member of the National Association of Parliamentarians (NAP)

For those unfamiliar with the role of a Parliamentarian, a Parliamentarian provides guidance on the rules and procedures outlined in an organization's governing documents, such as bylaws, constitutions, and any adopted parliamentary authority. In the Virginia Junior Classical League (VJCL), the Parliamentarian's responsibilities include overseeing the VJCL election process and proposing updates to ensure the VJCL Constitution remains relevant and functional.

Parliamentarians are not limited to the field of Classics; they can serve in various organizations, particularly in the nonprofit sector. I have taken and passed the Membership Test for the National Association of Parliamentarians (NAP) and am currently awaiting my results for the credentialed Registered Parliamentarian Test. (Wish me luck!)

Saints' Latin Club's Parliamentarian

I served on the newly established Spirit Committee for my Latin Club during my sophomore year. In the spring, I transitioned into the role of our club's Parliamentarian. One of my initial projects in this position was drafting a constitution for submission to the National Junior Classical League's Local Constitution Contest. A constitution, as you may know, is a formal document that outlines the fundamental principles and rules governing the political organization of a club, state, or country, typically presented in the form of articles.

Winner of the NJCL Local Constitution Contest

For the first two years of high school, I served as my Model United Nation Club's Vice President. In these two years, I was able to help increase participation within the club. On my first year as president, I took charge and created our club's first version of a constitution.

I had the privilege of serving as one of the youngest members of the Nominations Committee in my local chapter of Jack & Jill of America. The Nominations Committee is responsible for ensuring a smooth and fair election process when voting for a new group of officers. My role involved overseeing candidate nominations, verifying eligibility, and coordinating election logistics to maintain transparency and fairness. Over the past two years, I have successfully helped conduct two elections, ensuring that they ran efficiently and without issue. This experience has not only deepened my understanding of organizational governance but also honed my skills in leadership and communication.

The National Junior Classical League (NJCL) hosts an annual Local Constitution Contest, which recognizes outstanding club constitutions. I am proud to have won first place in the most recent contest, which saw participation triple compared to the previous year. As a prize—one that will resonate with fellow parliamentarians—I received a signed copy of Robert's Rules of Order Newly Revised, 12th Edition. This hardcover edition was autographed by all of the NJCL officers, making it a unique and cherished addition to my collection. This recognition not only honors my work but also emphasizes the importance of detailed and well-structured governance documents within the JCL.
